Job opportunities while you study in Brisbane

As an international student in Brisbane you’re allowed to work while you study, so long as you comply with your visa requirements.

Working hours on a student visa are restricted to ensure you can balance your study and work. The restrictions give you ample time to focus on your studies and complete your education while still financially supporting yourself and gaining work experience.

If you plan to work while you study, you will need to understand your rights and responsibilities as an international student.

  • Hours: Most student visas allow you to work up to 48 hours every two weeks, and unlimited hours during holidays and study breaks.
  • Legal protections: International students have the same workplace protections as anyone working in Australia.
  • Payment: No matter the job you do, you will be paid at least the minimum hourly rate. The rate is reviewed each year – you can consult the Fair Work Ombudsman for the current National Minimum Wage, and information on the different pay arrangements for different employment types.
  • Support: If you have concerns or questions about working in Australia, you can find help from the government, private organisations, and your educational institution.

Brisbane has many flexible, part-time and casual jobs available.

Ideally you will find opportunity within your field of study, but most Australian students find casual jobs in retail, hospitality, tutoring, administration work, seasonal farm work, or services such as aged care or cleaning.

Finding work experience

Whether you are working to gain postgraduate experience or need a casual job to help support your living expenses, there are plenty of ways to find work in Brisbane to suit your situation.

While you study you can gain work experience with paid jobs, volunteer work and internships, which may give you an advantage over your fellow classmates after graduation.

Online career and recruitment websites can provide regularly updated work listings, searchable by industry. Recruitment firms also help to place people in casual or short-term work.

Your educational provider may have internship programs designed to give students real-world experience, and some university degrees may even require internship placements as part of the coursework.

Charities and non-profit organisations are often looking for volunteers, and by giving up your time you can meet new people, gain hands-on experience and give back to the Brisbane community. You can find volunteer opportunities at Go Volunteer or Volunteering Queensland

All work experience counts towards your future.
