When you come to Brisbane, we want it to feel like your second home.

We understand that studying in a new city can be both exciting and challenging, which is why you don’t have to do it alone. Brisbane has built a strong network of student support services, from an international student hotline, to dedicated support staff and mental health services.

There are student resources ready to guide you every step of the way, making sure you have the confidence to thrive academically, emotionally, and socially.

Support resources for international students

Brisbane and its institutions are committed to providing a nurturing and inclusive environment where you can meet like-minded students, make friends and find academic success.

Education providers

A new country means new systems, and most Brisbane education providers offer specialised support services to help international students settle into life in Brisbane.

You can get help:
  • Finding accommodation
  • Setting up a bank account
  • Dealing with homesickness
  • Getting English language assistance
  • Using public transport
  • Joining social clubs and making friends
  • Conforming to your student visa conditions

Contact your chosen university, school, or VET provider to find out how they can help you.

1800QSTUDY International Student Support Hotline

If you have questions about living in Brisbane and don’t know who to ask, call 1800QSTUDY (1800 778 839). This 24/7 hotline has been set up to assist international students in Queensland.

The hotline can help answer questions about things like employment, the local health system, and it offers after-hours support and translation services. Note: This is not an emergency number – if you require the police, fire or ambulance, please dial Triple Zero (000).

English language support

While living in Brisbane, there are many free ways to keep improving your English skills.

You could:
  • Ask your educational institution if they offer free English classes for international students. Many offer classes designed to fit around your studies.
  • Attend an English conversation meet-up at a Brisbane City Council library. Search the library events calendar and select 'English conversation groups' as the subtype.
  • Join the Brisbane ESL English as a Second Language Group and practice your English and professional networking skills at the same time.
  • Explore Your English Corner to find more free English classes in Brisbane

If you are feeling nervous about studying in English, TAFE Queensland offers a 12-week English for Academic Purposes course that will help you build confidence.

  • Headspace – an Australian non-profit with free mental health support for youth aged 12 – 25
  • Beyond Blue – an Australian mental health and wellbeing support organisation
  • 1800 QSTUDY (1800 778 839) – the hotline can match you with more resources

LGBTQI Support

Brisbane has a dedicated club for international LGBTQI students to meet, connect and celebrate diversity.

The Brisbane Rainbow Club goes by the motto, “pride in friendship” and offers a safe and inclusive space for international students in the queer community to feel at home.
