A student’s guide to O Week in Brisbane

17 JULY 2023

OK, it’s time to get serious. No more sleeping in until midday, no more binge-watching Netflix, no more midnight shenanigans. Semester 1 is just around the corner and the best way to prepare is with a week of orientation events – better known as O Week.

O Week usually falls on the third or fourth week or February, and some universities host a mid-year Welcome Week in July for the Semester 2 intake as well. It’s best to check with individual education institutions regarding the exact dates and programs.

You can pack your O Week days with campus tours, information sessions and workshops to familiarise yourself with your new university, and use your nights to socialise with your new classmates.

O Week may well be one of the most memorable weeks of your uni life – here’s how to make it a good one.

Griffith University

The official O Week Market Day on Nathan campus usually falls during mid or late February, and includes a giant street market, live performances, roving entertainment, product sampling and countless stalls. Logan campus will usually host its Market Day the day before or after Nathan, turning the centre of the campus into a mix of stalls, samples and live music.

There’s also a special international student welcome and orientation session across Griffith's campuses throughout the course of the week, as well as an international student market at both the Nathan campus and the Gold Coast campus. At this market, you’ll find a free lunch, entertainment, games and information about university and community services.

A free Brisbane City Twilight Walking Tour with Griffith Mates, a group of Australian and international students, is a great way to get to know the city during O Week.

Queensland University of Technology (QUT)

QUT's Orientation lunches run across the week at Gardens Point, Kelvin Grove and the Creative Industries Precinct. Grab a bite for a student-friendly $2, and meet and sign up to QUT student groups and clubs. If you're new to Brisbane, you can join a free bus or walking tour – a great way to meet others who are keen to explore and get to know the city.

Check out all the QUT O Week events here (student login required).

The University of Queensland (UQ)

Market Day at UQ’s St Lucia campus brings hundreds of stalls, as well as entertainment, giveaways and demonstrations to the campus. Club stalls will be on display in the Great Court and include everything from political and religious groups to sporting and international clubs.

A welcome BBQ held in a traditional Aussie style is usually the biggest event of the week.

New students are asked to attend a getting started session for practical information about enrolling, ID cards, campus accessibility and how to connect with other UQ students.

Australian Catholic University (ACU)

ACU’s official orientation week gives you the chance to mingle with your classmates, take part in sessions specific to your studies, learn more about the student services available, and take part in a campus tour.

Central Queensland University (CQU)

CQU run compulsory orientation events and sessions for international students. Keep an eye on your emails and the university website for information on when you should attend.

University of Southern Queensland (USQ)

On-campus orientation for new students and international students usually starts in late February at USQ across the Toowoomba, Ipswich and Springfield campuses.

O Week at USQ has traditionally involved carnivals, pancake breakfasts, trivia challenges and more – keep an eye on your emails and the university website for information on orientation events!

University of the Sunshine Coast (USC)

The USC South Bank campus usually hosts a February orientation day, but you’ll find the majority of USC O Week events at its Sippy Downs campus, including a fun-filled Market Day.

In addition to regular O Week activities, USC have also planned events and activities that are especially for international students! Keep an eye out for updates from them about any events you may like to attend.
